DESCRIPTION:

This auction is for an terrific high grade, rare and desirable 1940 WORLD SERIES PROGRAM DETROIT TIGERS at CINCINNATI REDS. Reds won 4 games to 3 for Manager Bill McKechnie over Del Baker. Second Series win for Reds, first since 1919. Clean and lightly pencil scored for Game 2, 10/3 at tiny CROSLEY FIELD, Bucky Walters over Schoolboy Rowe, Reds 5-3.
For Game 7, Oct. 8, Newsom came back to start on just one day's rest, and after six innings, he owned a 1-0 lead over Paul Derringer thanks to an unearned run in the third. The Reds scored twice in the seventh, though, on back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice fly, and Derringer closed out the Series with a perfect ninth inning for a Reds Championship in 7 games.
The Reds' Bill Werber led all regulars with a .370 batting average, while the Tigers' Bobo Newsom recorded a 2-1 record and a 1.38 ERA. ... The victory was the National League's first since 1934.
