1944 LANE CEDAR CHEST / HOPE CHEST - EXCELLENT
- Source: eBay
This is a 1944 Lane Cedar Chest that has been in my family since new. This was purchased by my Grandmother new in 1944 which she gave to my mother as a wedding present. My mother called it a Hope Chest. I inherited it from my mother after she passed in 2001. It is very beautiful and has minimal wear for being 64 years old. I think the pictures do a good job of reflecting its condition. It is a Mahogany wood I believe and as you can see it has a matching front. My son said that is called "book-matched" -but I don't know. My father is 85 years young and is still with me and he said my grandmother paid extra for that type wood.
It has a removable top tray and it still has a very strong cedar aroma. My mother hadn't opened it for many years. When I received it, it was filled with my fathers WWII items and many clothes, cards and various things she kept since my birth. The lock is a dual combination and key type. I do not know the combination but I do have the key so it does still lock if you wish. It still has the newspapers lined on the bottom from the last time my mother lined it and they are dated 1948. The top tray has the original green felt finish in excellent condition. It also has a liner over the top of the tray which appears to be shelf paper from 1948 as well. Both can be easily removed.
I offer it now only because
