Globe TerrestreSans Rival 30.5 cm diameter glass globe, internal illumination, 12 chromolithograph gores, Full Meridian with "Twin Atlas" Base, George F. Cram Co., Indianapolis, circa 1949 We are pleased to offer this classic French language glass globe with internal illumination from the Indianapolis workshops of the George F. Cram Company. The globe shows the state of Israel (1948) but does not show the division of East Germany and West Germany (1949) so it can be quite accurately dated to late 1948 or early 1949. Very few of these finely crafted glass globes from this period survive, and this handsome example is quite well preserved. The traditional "green ocean" Cram style is presented here with the signature analemma , and with the rotatable full meridian and twin Atlas figures supporting the globe an a handsome fruitwood base the globe makes for an elegant presentation without illumination: But with illumination in a dark room, the globe takes on an entirely different character : Internally illuminated globes remain popular today, but of course are nearly all made of plastic.
