Tight races are the rule with the American League East the only exception! The 1979 APBA Season set. Published in 1980 (Play result "12" is at dice roll "16") the set is in excellent condition. The 1979 Major League Baseball season had three division races decided by three games or fewer. While the Orioles took the American League East by eight while winning 102 games to lead all of MLB, the Angels took the West Division crown by a mere three games over the Kansas City Royals. Over in the National League the Pirates won the East by two games over the Montreal Expos while Cincinnati bested Houston by only a game and a half although the Reds were two games up in the loss column. The World Series found Pittsburgh's "We Are Family" Pirates and Baltimore squaring off. Fans of both clubs can recite the details, suffice it to say here that an Orioles fan may want to jump right to the Series to finish off the Bucs while a Pirates fan may want to dispatch Baltimore a bit more quickly than was the case 38 years ago. But the close races didn't end with division races. The awards were closely fought as well with two ending in ties. California's Don Baylor was the American League MVP but the National League was a tie between Keith Hernandez of St. Louis and Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell, who took the World Series MVP award outright.
