American silver eagle history The Mint began making this coin in 1986, using the "walking liberty" design by Adolph A. Weinman that was used on half-dollar coins from 1916 to 1947. The reverse features a heraldic eagle that John Mercanti designed. About 5 million of the eagles were minted during the early years, with production increasing since 1999 to closer to 10 million per year. Composition The coin contains 99.93 percent silver to give it a net weight of 1 oz. of pure silver. Copper comprises the other .07 percent of the coin. The silver eagle weighs 31 g and has a diameter of nearly 41 mm. Locations U.S. Mint locations in Philadelphia and San Francisco originally struck the coin. Production at San Francisco stopped in 1993 and began at West Point in 1995. Since 2001 the coin has been produced at West Point exclusively. Fun Fact Almost all silver eagles produced at West Point do not contain a "W" mint mark. However, in 2006 to honor the 20th anniversary of the Mint's Bullion Coinage Program, all silver eagles were stamped with a "W" except for the hard-to-find reverse proof, which was struck in Philadelphia.
