There are few coins that capture the rich history of a country like the distinctive design of the Mexican Libertad does. One side of the coin is dominated by Mexico's coat of arms. While most people may recognize this iconic illustration of the eagle on the cactus, they may not be aware that this symbol has its roots in the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy.

Aztec tribes once wandered the Mexican valley searching for a location to build their city. Their patron God told them that the location for this city would be signaled by the sighting of an eagle perched on a cactus with a serpent in its beak.

The great Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, meaning " among the prickly pears ", was built on a swampy island in Lake Texcoco where the Aztecs found the fated bird they had been seeking. It became one of the most astonishing cities of the ancient world, believed to have dazzled the European conquerors with its majesty and size. The city, which was conquered, destroyed and rebuilt, eventually became modern day Mexico City.
