Shepard became the first American to fly in space on a short, 15 minute sub-orbital flight of the Mercury program. Only three weeks after the historic flight, President John F. Kennedy raised the stakes on the intense space race with the Russians by announcing to Congress and to the Nation that America was setting the goal of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely by the end of the decade. The challenge was daunting, almost incomprehensible in its complexity, difficulty, and expensive. Moonshot is the story of that challenge and that triumph, told by two men who were t from the first, Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton. Shepard would eventually become the 5th American to walk on the moon and the only Original Mercury Seven Astronaut to do so.
