50's Japan Clamshell Water Flower Wonder Shell 12 & Box These are novelty items from the 1950's, made in Japan and sold in "dimestores". They are called "Wonder Shells", "Water Flowers", "Clamshell Flowers" or "Flowers in the Shell", because they would open under water to reveal a flower (I believe it was paper?). Here are 12 original, unused ones still in the original Japan box! I have tried to research these and found them to be extremely hard to come by and have never found a reference to them still in their original box. All the shells vary slightly in design, but are all the same size, around 1-1/4". Each shell still has the original paper banner around it. Two of the shells have tight cracks, nothing major. Of course, since they have been sitting around for over 60 years, there is no guarantee that they will still produce a flower when submerged in water. They are offered for their collectible value, a hard-to-find bit of nostalgia. The box is in good condition, not perfect but with no split corners. It measures 4-5/8" by 4-7/8".
