Up for Auction are a very rare and first U.S. Aerial Mail Pilots Wings . The US Aerial Mail Service was started on August 12,1918, the Post Office Department taking charge of the U.S. airmail service from the US Army. The Army short lived venture ended after a 100 day fiasco. Postal Department officials took charge after Congress passed legislation given them the authority. Post Office officials bought and ordered aircraft, hired pilots to fly them, and began mapping out airmail routes across the country. The wings are made of medal, they look bronze however I am not sure. The U.S. Airmail Service played the leading role in the development of commercial aviation. The money the fledgling industry received for carrying mail gave the airlines the capital and incentive to maintain and expand their routes and upgrade their services. The US Aerial Mail Service was disbanded in 1926, after private airlines were awarded contracts by the Postal Service. If the first commercial airlines had relied only on paying passengers, none would have survived its first years. In the early years, some carriers made 95 percent of their revenues from carrying the mail on contract airmail routes, known as CAMs. *If you would like to learn more about the early days of Airmail, the Smithsonian has a first class presentation.* Smithsonian National Postal Museum
