African American Woman"~ Isobel Sanford ~ California WPA Era Painting ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ Striking modernist WPA era painting of an African American woman by California artist, Isobel Burgess Sanford (1911 - 2004).This work was painted with oils on canvas and is mounted in it's original handmade, white-painted frame.The painting is signed by the artist, lower right, "I. Sanford". The work is undated but was likely executed during the early to mid 1940's. SIZE: Painting - 16" x 24" / Frame - 21.5" x 29.5" This painting is a very fine and rare example of Isobel Sanford's work. It is a stylized portrait of a young African American woman, possibly a friend of Sanford's, and is quite modern in style. Isobel Sanford painted in the California expressionist manner, with the influences of regionalism and similarities to the work of Diego Rivera and the other muralists who worked in the San Francisco area during the 1930's and 40's.She exhibited at the Oakland Museum (then called the Oakland Art Gallery), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Academy of Design in New York City, and her work was highly thought of.This painting is in good original, untouched condition and displays nicely as it is, however it could use a cleaning and care by a conservator at some point.
