Abassid Caliph al-Mansur Has Arrived !! (158 Hegira) 24.81mm 2.9g This is a scarce and beautiful, nicely toned silver dirham from Abu Jafar al-Mansur. Al-Mansur was the 2nd Abbasid Caliph, and the first to rule from Baghdad, establishing that city in 762 A.D. Al-Mansur was both scholarly and religious, two fields which flourished under his rule. He died in 775 A.D. while enroute to Mecca to make Hajj. That was the year this coin was struck, making this coin extra special. His followers reportedly dug hundreds of graves in an attempt to hide their leader's body from their enemies the Umayyads. This is a scarce variety of this coin--and features the BAKH BALH symbols, or words which mean, basically, Very Good. This pertains to the silver content, and is to show that coin is a higher and better quality of silver than others. Very interesting!! This is a wonderful and rare coin, an ancient Islamic dirham.
