American ArtDeco Painting by Listed Artist Harold J. English (1911-2008). Oil on canvas. Unsigned. Size: 28 ¼ X 21 1/4 in., Unframed Harold J. English (American, 1911-2008) Harold "Hal" English, a highly regarded Western New York regional artist, is best known for his portraits and his landscapes, especially his realistic pen-and-ink drawings of favorite Western New York scenes and landmarks. He w orked in a variety of media -- including oils, pastels, charcoal and pen-and-ink -- and earned the title of "master pastelist" after winning best-in-show for three years at the Pastel Society of America's national exhibition in New York City. Born in Buffalo, he grew up in the Lovejoy area and graduated from Buffalo Technical High School. He studied art and drawing at the Albright Art School. During the Depression, he earned money by hand-painting signs for storefronts, windows of auto dealers and rooftop billboards. He also worked on an ice wagon, delivering 50-pound blocks of ice to homes without electric refrigerators. Freelance and as an employee of the Buffalo office of the advertising firm Batten Barton Durstine & Osborn, he worked for 30 years as an advertising artist and commercial artist, serving variously as art director, advertising consultant and lettering specialist.
