Housed under glass in a modern frame.For history on Merry Mills and the theater, see Lucey - Archie and Amelie: Love and Madness in the Gilded Age, pp. 270-271.Merry Mills (or Merrie Mill as it is called today for its original name) in Keswick, Virginia, was founded in 1857 and once owned by John Armstrong Chanler, an heir of the Astor fortune. Chanler converted a cow barn into a theater to house 300 people, showing regular films complete with a player piano and snacks.Provenance:From a private Virginia collector. Originally displayed at Merry Mills movie theater, Albemarle County, Virginia.Circa:Circa 1923.Dimensions:26 3/4" x 41" sight, 28 1/4" x 42 1/2" OA.Condition Report:Overall toning, several repaired tears, expected folds and creases, and holes in corners from pins.
