Vintage postcard produced to raise money for the Roald Amundsen North Pole polar drift expedition that was planned to depart in the Fram in 1918. These were sold through newspapers in Scandinavia from 1913 onwards. Two versions of the official Amundsen Arctic Drift Expedition (1918-24) postcards were produced with identical shipboard postmarks from the Norwegian-authorized post office. Called "Polhavet" ( Polar Seas ), one postmark is dated 13 September 1918, as the drifting ship travelled over the Arctic Ocean trying to prove that northern currents would carry it over the North Pole, and was preparing for its first high Arctic wintering. The second postmark (4 August 1924) marks the ending of the expedition as it headed back to Norway . This card represents a version of the card printed well before the expedition departed and the original ship Fram still was its intended vessel. When it was clear that the Fram was no longer suitable for another arctic expedition, Amundsen decided to use a new ship called the Maud, but the majority of the postcards had already been printed with the Fram described on the card. This postcard is one of a rarely seen number overprinted by a Danish Newspaper, Fyens Stiftstidende, and sold to its readers. The postcards arrived back at the addresses in 1925 and 1926.
