This book features 103 works of painting and sculpture from the personal collection of astute connoisseur and dealer Sidney Janis that were gifted to MOMA . The "three generations of modern art" represented are dealt with in separate sections, each preceded by a brief essay.

The opening section, devoted to " Modern Masters and Movements in Europe before the Second World War ", includes works by artists associated with Cubism, Expressionism, Dada, Surrealism , and related tendencies. Among them are five by PICASSO , two by KLEE , four by LEGER , eight by MONDRIAN, a Futurist masterpiece by BOCCIONI, and early di CHIRICO , and one of DALI's best-known paintings, as well as five collages by SCHWITTERS and four works by ARP.
