From the inside flap:

In 1908 we triumphantly published a new book by a new writer - Anne of Green Gables, by L.M. Montgomery. Poets, statesmen, humorists, critics - the great public - lost their hearts to the charming heroine and her world-cheering philosophy. Mark Twain hailed the redheaded heroine as "the dearest and most moving and delightful child of fiction since the immortal Alice."

Anne of Green Gables leaped immediately into the ranks of the "six best sellers." But here was not "a book of the season" to attain wide popularity for a brief space and then sink into oblivion. Anne of Green Gables has retained her lead in the bestseller class for thirty-seven years, more than a million copies having been sold in the United States and Canada, and has been rightly acclaimed one of the few American classics.
