During the early years of our country, black ash trees were harvested and were the main source of wood used for everything in the household from dough bowls to baskets. Later black ash nearly became extinct in New England due to the over harvesting of this prized wood. One of the most popular styles of basket was the rib and splint type. It is considered one of the most difficult to make. The rounded body of the basket with the high sides was perfect for collecting eggs.
