Antique 18thC Sevres Soft Paste Porcelain Bouillon Soup Cup & Lid Porcelaine

For sale is a superb bouillon cup with its lid made by Sevres in 1770. The bouillon rond was used for soup as part of the elaborate courses of the French dinner banquets of the period. The simple, refined decoration of this cup was featured on large dinner services of the period and is a favorite of serious collectors. It is made of soft paste porcelain and has three superb floral arrangements on both the lid and the main body, the typical blue line trim with small gilt lines breaking it up and the cup itself has two intertwined handles also highlighted with blue and gold. Nice branch handle finial to the lid. The set is in superb condition with a bit of wear to the gilding on the top edge of the cup which is not visible when the lid is in place. The top berry of the finial also has some wear to the gilding. The gold trim is made from honey gold they used which has a nice color and is thickly applied. The enamel colors of the flowers are amazing. You can feel them with your fingers as you run over them. The piece is marked with the interlaced LL mark with the date letter R for 1770 in the center , the letters B.n. for Bulidon who painted bouquets from 1763 until 1792. There is another decorator's mark on the foot ring but I cannot make it out enough to figure out who it stands for. The cup with the lid in place is 3.75 inches tall ... read more
