The sword sheathed is a total of 40 1/2 inches long. The grip is 5" long and the blade is 34" with a scabbard length of 35". This was a presentation sword. The scabbard is inscribed "Captain J M Oliver, Regimental Quartermaster, A.P.I. (Alabama Polytechnic Institute) 1914-1915." During this period there was a US Army Cadet Corps at A.P.I. Today the Alabama Polytechnic Institute is known as Auburn University. The piece has lots of issues but none that can't be repaired. I talked to someone who does nickel and chrome plating and he told me the rust could easily be removed from the blade and scabbard at a very fair price and both re-plated to look like new. However, I know some collectors want collectibles like these to remain as they are so this is still a very good piece for a collection despite the flaws. If you are a graduate of Auburn university this would be a great piece to buy and donate back to your Alma Mater.
