ANTIQUE Calico Covered School Book 1880sFrom the age of the one room school house. This charming example of a cloth covered school book is late 19th century.
The book is covered with a brown cotton calico cloth on the outside. The inner cover had a deeper brown cloth stitched to it.
This is a spelling book and it was inscribed and dated on the front leaf as belonging to Anna Louisa Deardorff. The same inscription appears on the back fly leaf.
The inscription goes on to say: Book Bought November the 2nd ad 1883. Below that it says: Locust Grove School 1888.
I don't know if the school was located in Kentucky, Georgia, Oklahoma, Virginia or Pennsylvania---t's a Locust Grove in each of those states.
Titled A Comprehensive Spelling book, it was written by Geoffrey Buckwalter and published in Philadelphia in 1879.
Measures about 4 3/4 inches x 7 3/8 inches.
The book was probably used by more than one child and shows the wear that makes this such a charming country antique.
Cloth faded and worn at corners and bottom edges. Cloth on spine tore at some point and was stitched together. Front and back end papers peeling from original cloth spine. Foxing and page edges sunned, chipped.
