This U.S. Cavalry dispatch bag was originally part of a (M) 1885 pattern saddle kit. When the saddle was too worn, it was a very common practice to carefully cut the bags away and add a strap. This example is in very good condition for its age, displaying a wonderful rich dark chestnut brown color that only comes with age. The leather is still quite supple, with original buckles, etc. That's not to say that it isn't fragile because old leather is always to be handled with care. There is a tiny tear in the top left-hand side of the flap (it measures about 1/16 of an inch). And there is a tiny tear less than 1/16 of an inch by the one rivet. There are two holes on the back but I think that is where it was attached to the saddle (?). There is also some "depressions" in the leather - which could be from wear (please see the close-up pictures) - but nothing that detracts from this classic piece of highly collectible U.S. Cavalry attributed Americana. It measures: 12 inches in width, 14 inches in height (just the bag) and 4 inches in depth. The strap measures 26 inches in total length (13 inches from bag). I try to describe my items to the best of my ability - please take the time to look at the pictures closely and ask any questions you might have.
