Huge Rare Antique Chinoiserie Chinese Lacquer Sewing Box circa 1850measure approximately 14” wide by 11” deep and 7” high Elongated octagon shaped sarcophagus type casket box mounted on carved paw feet with brass handles. One handle is missing. With Over 20 Period FauxIvory Tools. Some are in excellent condition and some are broken. Drawer and lift out tray fitted with appropriate and authentic textile tools and sewing etui of the period for handiwork such as embroidery, petit point, needlepoint, tapestry, crochet, darning, tatting, and lace making. The box has typical wear and there are several chips and bruises to the lacquer and area of missing lacquer due to its age. In most of the intricate scenes you can clearly see serene expressions on the faces of dignified and elegant people enjoying beautiful pavilions and courtyards in the traditional figural court garden scenes. Countless hours of skilled attention was required for the artisans to apply two different shades of gold gilt paint over the layers of black lacquer with the slightest touches of red. Some brushes must have been the size of a single eyelash. It is remarkable that human hands even created the incredible decorations that cover this dramatic and impressive box, inside and out.
