Early Sporting Cigarette Case and Match Safe Set~Original Presentation Box ~ Late19th - Early 20th Century ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ Very nice American presentation smoking set, dating from the 1890's - 1910 era, and consisting of a cigarette case and match safe in a fitted, silk-lined box. Both pieces, the cigarette case and the match safe, have a gold-gilt finish, and although the body of the metal is unknown, it is likely steel, copper, or brass (I don't think it is silver as there are n hallmarks or markings).The cigarette case features a hand-engraved scene with a man on a bicycle, with trees on the left and fence and signpost on the right. He is wearing an early cycling costume or possibly bicycle racing clothes.The match safe has a hand-engraved scene with a harness racing scene. It shows an man in an early, large wheeled sulky, with the track fences and flags in the background.As the match safe has a racing scene, I suspect that the scene on the cigarette case may be a bicycle racing scene.Both pieces have been personalized with a "CC" or "GG" monogram of engraved initials on the backs. The presentation box is nicely lined with blue silk, has fitted compartments for the case and safe, and a white ribbon which may have had writing on it at one time but has faded completely.
