ANTIQUE (circa 1900) Sage Dip Wedgwood Jasperware Biscuit Barrel & Cover
The fabulous antique Jasperware pieces just keep coming and here is another that I know will get you collectors going. It is an exquisite, turn of the century, sage dip biscuit barrel and lid.
Measuring approximately 20cm in height (to the cover finial) and with a rim diameter of around 13.5cm this outstanding example features extensive white bas-relief, neo-classical, imagery to its sage dipped body. The interior, as with most of these barrels, is glazed. The cover carries a large acorn finial handle that has the accompanying acorn leaves radiating from it (see images).
The barrel is impress marked to the base, as per the additional image. Whilst this particular mark spans a period from 1891-1908, I would place this piece around the turn of the century (1900).
The piece is in overall excellent condition. There is one very small surface chip to the outer rim of the body (I have indicated how small his is with the tip of a ballpoint pen). There are also a couple of fissure/creases to the acorn leaves on the cover.
This is an exceptional piece of antique Jasperware. That it has both elements in ceramic, as opposed to the EPNS covers etc, is a sign of its quality. The very small flaw, whilst visible, is almost inconsequential bearing in
