Antique French Victorian 18ct Gold unusual female Chimera Griffin Brooch

Beautiful condition highly collectible French 18ct Gold Chimera or Griffon elongated Brooch, approx. 42 x 28 x 10 mm, with a rare female variation on a classical acanthus scrolled base. Lovely soft matte satin-textured surface to replicate an archaological treasure.

The Chimera was a popular motif originating in Paris and adopted in Germany, UK and USA between 1880 - 1900. The mythological creature was composed of a lions head, dragons wings with birds feet and this one has a sphinx-like female torso as well!

Hallmarked with the French Eagle's Head for 18ct Gold (The punchmark is a little high and shows lower part of head.) Old style makers marks and to pin. Approx. weight 3.3 grams. 2.5 mm uneven Pearl highlighting the mouth. A 2mm double pierced gallery runs around the border to raise the design.

Very good condition. A lovely quality reminder of this strange fashion in a very wearable shape, generous size and elegant form.
