ANTIQUE GEORGIAN PRIMITIVE SCOTTISH OIL PAINTING ALEXANDER CHRYSTIE c1790 A naively painted Georgian portrait of Alexander Chrystie of Balchrystie. The portrait is in oils on a wood panel (the edge of which can be seen in photo 4) Alexander Chrystie became a Captain and later an Admiral in The Royal Navy. He married Margaret Robertson in 1779 and had a daughter Jane in 1796. He died in 1804. I am told that the Chrystie family of Balchrystie in Fife, Scotland were ancestors of the founder of the famous Christie's auction House in London. The painting sits in the original gilt gesso frame behind glass which has protected it well but makes it very difficult to photograph well! The painting is much more impressive than appears in the photos. It has never been moved from the frame and I do not wish to be the first to do this so I cannot confirm if it is signed. As Alex Chrystie died in 1804, I believe the painting dates to circa 1790. The gilt finish on the frame is chipped as seen otherwise condition is very good. The frame measures 13 x 11 inches.
