An old diorama of the hospital ship HMHS Rohilla which sank off Whitby in October 1914, featuring a half hull model of the ship's appearance before the wreck and two pieces of shrapnel from the 1914 German bombardment of Whitby. It was at first thought that the Rohilla had hit a German mine, but this was later discounted. 84 lives were lost despite many acts of heroism. I would say that this old diorama was made at some time between 1914 and 1920, possibly for the 1919 Lifeboat exhibition in Whitby which featured many relics of the Rohilla. It is in good condition though it may have replacement wires securing the shell shrapnel and minor re-gluing of the frame. There is a glass front to the piece. It measures 6.25 inches high, 11.5 inches wide and 3.5 inches deep (16 by 29.5 by 9 cm.)
