I am pleased to offer this very old vintage FIREMAN'S HAT HELMET , a symbol of brave firefighters. It looks like hard leather. It also appears to have gotten quite hot with cracking in the hard leather from the mix of hot and water, similar to what happens to a saddle if exposed. Has substantial lined cloth ear flaps inside, plus an interior hat tag that says CAIRNS SANITARY CUSHION LINING PATENTED and PATS PEND. Brass emblem on top say FD with a tiny fire hydrant, hook and ladder, and has a patent date of 1,889,537, which puts it at 1932.

Inside has metal tag that says CAIRNS & BROTHER Inc. CLIFTON, NEW JERSEY, MFRS of FIREMEN'S EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES. The two Cairns brothers started out making badges, and soon joined with another company to produce helmets. Cairns was the leader in the fire service helmet industry throughout the US and Canada, and was purchased by the Mine Safety Association.

This helmet comes from a collector in Canon City, Colorado, tho I neglected to ask if the helmet actually came from the town's history! It may have! My reserve is 49.99

NOTE: THIS AUCTION WILL END ON A SUNDAY NIGHT, March 18th, the day after ST. PATRICKS DAY, around 8:30 pm MOUNTAIN TIME. So be sure and leave your proxy bid and WIN! :o)
