is a very beautiful pair of antique vases, presumably French, but conceivably made elsew T are no marks that I can find on these vases that might indicate their manufacture. The porcelain is a lovely sky blue, on which appear framed ovals containing scenes that suggest the work of the painter Watteau: on one vase the gentleman is seranading his lady, on the other, the lady is dancing to her suitor's guitar accompaniment. These scenes are handpainted, I believe. To me all this looks rather like Sevres, or at any rate has been done in the manner of Sevres. On each vase, in the base, t is framed a small plaque showing a rustic country retreat. The mood is "pastoral escape."The ormolu is very pretty, and is patinated. It could, I think, be rendered brighter by cleaning it, because t is clearly some accretion of dirt on it---but I thought it better not to try this. The ormolu decoration depicts oak leaves, acanthus, torches, volutes, with lion paw feet, etc. Very pretty! --Each vase, in its mounting, measures approximately: 13 1/4 inches tall, 5 inches wide, and 4 inches deep.My guess as to the age of this pair of vases would be 1885-1905, but I really don't know. They are definitely quite old.. The ormolu lids on the vases do not come off. Everything is in pretty good shape, I think, considering the age of the pieces. T is nothing broken
