This wonderful large southern New England painted Indian basket was recently purchsed from the estate of the late Mabel Sprague of Johnston Rhode Island. The basket was found in the 18th century attic w it had probably sat for many generations. The beautiful blue and red painted designs are the type commonly found on early Nipmuc and Pequot baskets. It is intersting to note that a relative of the Johnston Sprague's, Sarah Brown Sprague was a Nipmuc Indian that made her living selling baskets in the early to mid 19th century and it is possible that this basket could have been made by her. The basket measures 16 inches handle to handle and is 14 inches wide by 6 inches deep. This large early basket is in a fine state of preservation and the blue and red paint is extraordinarily vibrant! Buyer pays shipping & insurance. Guaranteed to be authentic and in completely original condition! Buyer pays shipping & insurance. T is a small water stain in one corner and some very minor stains on the inside bottom otherwise excellent condition! Baskets of this age are rarely found in such fine condition!
