Antique Stoneware: 2G Whiskey Merchant Jug (WV) w/ Cobalt Decoration, ca.1870's

An exceptional Cobalt-Decorated 2Gal. Whiskey Jug with Merchant Advertising, ca.1870's. This Jug features both Stenciled and Brushed decoration, and likely made in Western Pennsylvania (Greensboro/New Geneva); or possibly from the Thompson pottery (Morgantown, WV). Features Merchant (and capacity) stenciling on the body in crisp, blue cobalt; there are a few typos that add to the overall character- see close-ups. Wheeling, WV was settled in the early 1880's, primarily by individuals of Germanic decent (Keim), and Centre Market Square (Market Street) is on the National Register of Historic Places. The handle terminals, shoulder and base are accented with Brushed Cobalt.
Condition: There are two stack marks (upper left side), and the tooled spout is slightly askew; otherwise excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs. A very nice example that will feature prominently in any Antique Stoneware collection. Please see photos for complete details and further description. The steel-gray colored base clay quite dense; this 2Gal. weighs just under 10 lbs. Measures 8-1/2"W x 14-1/2"H overall with a base diameter of 7-1/4".
