Lovely Antique Victorian-era Genuine Whitby JET Brooch Whitby Abbey Ruins c.1870 Rare and charming, hand-carved genuine Whitby Jet (tested) brooch depicting the Gothic Whitby Abbey Ruins. Likely a souvenir brooch and not a piece created for mourning purposes. It is in exquisite, near mint condition without chips or damage to the carving, the rippled edge or to the rear pin assembly. The tube hinge, c-clasp and extended pin stem all seem original to the piece. I do not see any repairs. From the condition of the brooch, I am assuming it was stored very carefully for many years.Measures 1.75" long x 1.50" wide******************************************************************* Whitby Jet is an intense hard black substance, closely allied to coal, and very light in weight, and good for carving. It is the fossilised wood of an ancient tree, similar to our present-day Araucaria or Monkey-puzzle tree. These flourished in the Jurassic Period about 180 million years ago. When the trees died, they fell into rivers, and were swept down into the sea, w they lay on the Ocean floor for millions of years. This occurred mainly on the East coast of England, and Whitby became the World centre for Jet.
