LARGE BYZANTINE BRONZE FOLLIS COIN OF JUSTINIAN I, MINT OF NICOMEDIA, 527-565 A.D.Superb Byzantine large bronze follis coin of Justinian I.Obverse: D. N. IVSTINIANVS PP. AVG. Helmeted, draped and cuirassed bust of Emperor Justinian facing, holding globe, cross and shield; to right cross. Reverse: Large M A/N/N/O and numerals representing the regnal year; above, cross; beneath officina letter; in ex., NIKO, mint of Nicomedia, 527-565 A.D. Condition: Fine.Justinian I, 527-565 A.D.Already the formulator of imperial policy under his uncle, Justin I, Justinian embarked upon his own momentous reign in 527, and ruled the Byzantine Empire for almost four decades. During this time North Africa was recovered from the Vandals, Italy liberated from the rule of the Goths, and a footing gained in Spain; once more, and for the last time in history, the Mediterranean could justly be called a Roman lake.
