Artist Signed(C.Warth) Mettlach -Villeroy & Boch- Stoneware Beer Stein Date 1901

This 19th c. Mettlach stoneware beer stein is signed by C. Warth who worked for Mettlach from 1885-1896, Our stein bears Mettlach's date mark for 1901. It is also stamped with model 1403. It also has the Villeroy and Boch "Mercury" ink stamp that was used in this period. The image on the stein shows a tavern interior with beer drinkers and a man standing with what looks like a bowling ball. The lid has a matrix like pattern or could be seen as a medieval barbican. The stein stands 7.5" tall to the top of the lidand has a diameter of 3 7/8" at the base. The stein is in excellent condition (including the pewter fittings) except for three hairline firing cracks in the lid (see photos).
