Astronomy, in Five Books. By Roger Long. (In Two Volumes). Printed in 1742 and 1764(84) for the Author: Cambridge. This is the first edition. [xvi],[8],356; [iv],357-728,[14] pages. Quarto size, each volume measures 9.75" x 8". All boards lacking. The first 32 pages in volume one are detached as one page gathering; the first and last few leaves in volume two are detached, otherwise, text blocks are tight. The detached leaves in volume two are chipped and worn at the margins. Scattered foxing throughout both volumes. Exlibrary. Including the frontispiece in each volume, t are 99 folding plates, many of which are quite impressive, particularly two illustrating the surface of the moon as copied from Hevelius and Ricciolus. Some of the plates have a library stamp on the blank verso. "In the year 1764, Dr. Long published the third book of his Astronomy as a part only of his second volume. Before the time of his death he had finished and printed off the fourth, and a small part of the fifth book. Mr. Dunthorn made ... a rough draft of the remaining part ... After his death, Mr. Wales was prevailed upon to revise and correct Mr. Dunthorn's continuation, and to complete it upon the original plan." (Advertisement at the end of volume two).
