This is a No Reserve Auction for an ancient coin typically referred to as an "Emergency Issue" tetradrachm of Athens, circa 406-404 BC, perhaps minted by Athens in the final crisis at the end of the Peloponnesian Wars. This coin has a copper core and was originally plated with silver, some of which still remains, primarily on the obverse. The coin weighs 14.61 grams. This specimen is clearly of ancient origin; the edge has the roughness and fine porosity one would expect to see on a coin of this nature--no seam or other evidence of modern manufacture. Furthermore, this coin was at one point in the inventory of leading ancient coin dealer Amphora coins, whose principal, David Hendin, is an acknowledged expert on authenticity, having written books and articles on the subject. The fact that it is ex. Amphora also suggests a possibility that this coin was unearthed somewhere in the Middle East. I will assume most people reading this listing already know the basic history of these Emergency or Fourree Athenian tetradrachms or "owls"; however, for further discussion, I highly recommend Reid Goldsborough's in-depth article that can be found online.
