Otakar Storch-Marien founded Aventinum in 1919. Jaromir Funke, a medical student at that time, originally intended to co-found it with Storch-Marien, but Funke's father forbid him. Combining modern design (Capek, Muzika, Vichnar, Masek, Benda, Kobliha, Teige, Hoffmeister, Mrkvicka, Funke, Klir and many others) and literature from 1919 to 1931, Aventinum was a major influence on modernist art, literature and design in Czechoslovakia. In 1931, Aventinum began to face financial hardships and went bankrupt in 1934.
