This is a 1920's Beswick England Staffordshire porcelain monk decanter, six matching shot cups and a carrying tray. The overall color is the rich dark brown of the Monk's robe, trimmed in beige. The complete set measures 9-1/2 inches tall, 9-1/2 inches wide and is 23-inches around the tray. It is a well-made and eye-catching set from an estate sale in Culpeper, Virginia. The monk, of course, is the decanter; his head is the stopper; and his cloak collar is a cleverly-designed pouring spout. The decanter has a liquid capacity of 18 shot cups, and each shot cup holds 1/4-cup. The tray is rectangular in shape and accommodates the decanter and the six cups. This set is in fabulous condition without chips or cracks, which is remarkable considering the delicate porcelain and age of the set. The stopper has a small piece of missing cork, but this does not affect its function and, if ever needed, could easily be replaced with a strip of sheet cork. E ach cup is marked with the green circular Beswick England backstamp, and both the decanter and tray are marked, "Beswick England Made For Heatmaster." This porcelain has a long history: The John Beswick factory made the decanter set for Ellgreave Company for its Heatmaster line. Ellgreave was a division of Arthur Wood & Sons.
