This Victorian Age children's book had some colour plates that were removed many years ago. This listing is for the remaining book of 16 complete and fully bound sets of illustrations and text which are in rather good condition considering its age. This 1897 book references Black Americans in a way that is nowadays very inappropriate. Warning: The caricatures and text contained within are unsuitable for viewing unless the reader is specifically looking for a vintage Black Americana item.

The Blackberries and Their Adventures: Children's poetry book - originally also had 16 colour plates (now removed ). This remaining pre-school poetry book is for sale with 16 sets of poetry text and colour illustrations printed in orange within the publisher's cloth-backed pictorial boards. A delightful book. Very old - scuffed and bumped with tear on spine. Published LONDON, Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co 1897 Caricatures of a black American family cycling, mountain climbing, hunting, fishing, golfing and playing Polo.

Edward Kemble was the major political cartoonist for the New York Graphic.

His lively cartoons attracted the attention of Mark Twain, who employed Kemble to illustrate Huckleberry

Edward Kemble is best remembered for his speciality, cartoons of African Americans. He is perhaps cartooning's supreme delineator of this subject and his characterizations were not absurdly exaggerated or racist but instead sympathetic. He took care to portray the environs and harsh living conditions of Black America.
