A fascinating book about the creation of a country place estate on Lake Geneva. Details the involvement of the owners, their architect, landscape gardener (the noted plantsman Charles Sprague Sargent who was then keeper of the Arnold Arboretum's renowned Collection at Harvard University and was commissioned by the Hutchinsons to handle the master site planning for the new landscaped grounds. Remnants still remain of this grand retreat on Snake Road which winds along the western side of the lake.

This book is loaded with nearly 200 historic photos documenting the entire project, with special attention to the plants installed (a detailed list is included) and to the abundant wildlife - both native and introduced species (first cardinals brought into Wisconsin).

Octavo book is in VG/VG+ condition, in pictorial boards. A great read for those interested in fine gardening, landscape architecture and nature.
