Bound Volume of New York DAILY GRAPHIC,1878. Measures about 15 by 21 inches and weighs nearly 15 lbs. Marbled board covers, bound in leather at the spine. An Illustrated Evening Newspaper, it was the first American newspaper with daily illustrations. It was founded by in New York in 1873 by a firm of Canadian engravers and began publication in March of that year. It continued publication until September 23, 1889. Highly illustrated, its lavish engravings included cartoons, reproductions of paintings, and illustrations of contemporary news events and notable personalities. Every bit the equal of Harper's Weekly, but in a daily publication - unheard of at the time. Articles of local and international interest; numerous pieces and engravings of Edison, his lab, his workshop, very early telephones, Edison himself using an early phonograph, etc, Mark Twain speaking at a dinner, a fight between a bull and two lions in San Antonio, William Tweed, the construction of the Statue of Liberty, the opening of A. T. Stewart's Hotel for Women, elevated railroad station at 42nd & 6th, Turkish-Russo War, construction of the East River Bridge, Louisiana State Lottery, wreck of the steamer METROPOLIS, other shipwrecks and fires, a drawing of competitor Thomas Nast, numerous large two page engravings, etc., etc. An eight page paper, absolutely loaded
