Gertrude Chandler Warner (1890-1979) she loved to read and write. As a sickly child, she had plenty of time for her books. She wrote and illustrated her first book at the age of nine. It was a Christmas gift for her grandfather entitled "Golliwogg at the Zoo" "published" by Warner & Co.Warner's experiences living across from a railroad station gave her the idea to write a story about orphaned children living in a boxcar. She published her best known book, The Boxcar Children in 1924. It was published by Rand McNally. She revised it in 1942 for educational publisher Scott, Foresman, making the story easier to read. She was hoping that children with reading problems would be able to understand the story and feel confident enough to read more stories. Warner went on to write 19 Boxcar Children mysteries as well as other books for children and adults.Warner was active in her community and her church. She joined the Connecticut Cancer Society in 1950 and won an award in 1965 for "Woman of the Year" from the Emblem Club. In 1967, the American Red Cross awarded her with a pin for 50 years of service.1950 Scott, Foresman edition. Red cloth with silhouetted cover illustration. 6 1/4" tall, 154 pages.
