Up for bid is an HO Division Point DP-5205 Southern Pacific Krauss Maffei. Ajin (who builds all of Overland Models diesels) built these for Division Point so they have the same smooth running tower drive, individual gearboxes on each wheelset and quality construction you find on Overland's diesels. Additional features are sprung trucks, directional lighting, lit number boards, see through everything and a gorgeous cab interior. I don't have a layout but this engine has been run back and forth on my little three foot test track about half a dozen times, it runs smooth and quiet. This is the SP version of the Krauss Maffei and Division Point chose to model it with a pilot plow which matches the 1965 to retirement era for this engine. When first delivered, the SP quickly discovered issues with the air intakes being located so high up on the carbody, so after some experimentation they came up with a series of louvers on the lower carbody panels to draw cooler air in, resulting in the need to relocate the air tanks to the top of the roof. Unlike the Rio Grande units, which underwent a similar modification, the SP placed its tanks towards the rear of the locomotive (much more balanced in my opinion!) Anyway, to make a long story short, this engine has all the correct late career details it should have. Out of the box this was a nice unit but like the other KM I sold on ebay earlier in the year it needed some additional detailing to be truly accurate. For some reason the SP KM's from Division Point all had the nose handrails omitted. My other KM, the Rio Grande version in SP paint had them from the factory, go figure. In any event, all KM's had nose handrails so I added them to match photos I have of the 9002. I also reshaped the front of the plow pilot to add that blunt area right in the middle. All the KM's with plows had this flat spot on the face of the plow, I presume to provide clearance when coupled nose to nose with another plow equipped unit. Once the shape was right I carefully painted that area with the correct shade of SP gray. The next detail that needed to be added was mu hoses to the pilot. Ajin modeled this area with the stubs of mu hoses on the mu brackets, five per side. For the era this unit is otherwise detailed to represent, this is incorrect as the SP had converted the units to their standard four hoses per side set up. I carefully removed the castings from the plow and replaced them with details west four hose mu sets. After some careful painting they look great and really add to the appearance of the engine. I didn't replace the stubs on the rear of the locomotive as they aren't easy to remove and I was afraid of damaging the locomotive in the process. Next up was installing a set of drilled MV lenses in the two headlight castings up front. Then it was on to the factory installed handrails and grab irons. Now, Division Point is to be commended for using beautiful castings for all these pieces, they are very impressive, but they are also very easy to bend. Ever one of these units I've seen, including the ones on the Division Point website has bent handrails and grab irons. I spent over an hour carefully straightening them all. After straightening I painted them to match prototype photos of 9002 during its later career. The nose grabs that form the ladder coming up the side of the nose and then up over the top were all in gray and red by this time so I carefully painted them using a custom mixed red and a matching gray. The top and bottom ends of the vertical side handrails were painted gray by this time so I did the same. The remaining white grabs that needed repainting on various parts of the locomotive were completed and then the project was wrapped up by painting the couplers with a coat of rust. I enjoyed this project and the locomotive came out very nice but I think its time to let it go.
