Large Hessian Four Bushel SACK

This old sack is a rare survivor and dates from the 1950's. This is the large size, that would have been normally used by the farms to transport grain, and fully laden weighed 2 cwt.

Initially farmers used sacks with their own name printed on, but since they invariably were never returned to them, the practice of using Railway sacks took over.

Very few have survived, considering the many thousands once in use.

I believe this to date from the early years of British Railways, as firstly the use of sacks rapidly declined, as grain wagons took over, and secondly this is one of several I have, including early pre-grouping examples.
