Byzantine Icon Madonna and Child

This is a depiction of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The back of the image has a label in both Italian and French: "Il fondo e in foglio d'oro. La sua esportazione dalla Grecia e permessa./ C' est une copie d' une Icone Byzantine fabriquee sur canevas, avec des couleurs hagiographique. Le fond c' est dore. Son exportation de Grece est permise." My Italian is a little rusty, but to the best of my ability, it says, "Copy of a Byzantine Icon made on canvas, with hagiographic colors [having to do with saints]. The front is in gold leaf. Its exportation from Greece is permitted." All the iconography attributed to Our Lady of Perpetual Help is depicted according to Catholic and Orthodox Christian religion perfectly and with remarkable craftsmanship.

This was my God-mother's. She was a frequent traveler. Most likely she purchased this during her trip to Athens over 15 years ago. The image is painted on stained wood with the background consisting of gold leafing. It is 4.75"h x 3.5"w x 0.75"d. The back has a hook made of leather attached to the work with a metal piece. No one can help but appreciate this work for its beauty regardless of religious affiliation.
