For your consideration is a wonderful Chinese export Mandarin Fan in the Cabriolet style. This fan was produced in China around c1830 for export to the West. This type of export fan is not seen very often compared to the single leaf style. T are two portions of pith or rice paper with the top portion done on one side with typical Canton scenes of brite colors and figures with faces of a natural off white material with hand painted facial features and applied garments of hand cut silk. The reverse shows a central vignette of the Anchorage of Whampoa which was (13) miles up from Canton. The smaller leaf displays a favorite subject of the Canton school which is birds amoungst flowers and foilage. The tu-tone gold gilt painting on the sticks is of a high quality and the center lacquer medallions terminate through the smaller leaf to thinner than usual sticks with guards that match the design. The fan is in excellent condition having all the original faces and silk garments along with the lacquer being in excellent condition including the original silk tassel. T is one inner stick near one end that has a portion of its lacquer medallion missing and then just a few of the seams in the paper leaf having short splits which is of the norm. All in all a great fan for investing in.
