! The Life of Christ By Frederic W. Farrar c1890 - London, Paris and New York - Cassell, Petter and Galpin 10.5" by 7.5", xxiv, 768, viiipp DETAILS Farrar's widely popular Life of Christ. With a frontispiece featuring a colour map of Palastine. Illustrations in the text throughout, including large head pieces to each chapter and some full page engravings. Frederic William Farrar (1831–1903), dean of Canterbury, novelist, and philologist, was born in the fort of Bombay on 7 August 1831. His scholarly but conservative and romantic Life of Christ (1874), enlivened by first-hand observation of the geographical setting of the gospel story, brought welcome reassurance to the faithful. The book ran through thirty editions in Britain, was translated into Russian, Japanese, and other languages, and was particularly treasured in Scandinavia. It was followed by The Life and Work of St Paul (1879) (one of his best books) and The Early Days of Christianity (1882), which explored Christian origins in the light of classical as well as biblical scholarship. DNB CONDITION In a half calf binding. Externally rubbed, the front joint cracked and delicate, the rear starting, the leather coming away. The hinges strained but holding firm.
