This old, original real photo postcard is titled, "The Harrogate Pierrots." The image is sharp and clear, with great details of the clowns and their costumes. The photo is marked "Mark Mitchell & Co. Prospect Studio." Condition is good with minor edge and corner wear, light silvering, and light smudging on the back. Postally unused. Pierrot is a stock character of mime and Commedia dell'Arte, a French variant of the Italian Pedrolino. His character is that of the sad clown, pining for love of Columbine, who inevitably breaks his heart and leaves him for Harlequin. He is usually depicted wearing a loose, white tunic. Harrogate (or Harrogate Spa) is a spa town in North Yorkshire, England, and pierrots seemed to have been a common entertainment.
