c. 1930s, Silhouette Etched, All Sterling Silver, Navajo "Bear" Fetish Earrings, with Shephard's Findings/Clasps ----------------------------------- A very pretty set of "Bear" fetish earrings; etched silhouettes in all sterling silver. The bear, in Navajo symbolism, is the protector; a symbol of physical strength & leadership. The hand-pulled silver outline/outer silhouette of the "Bear" is curved inward at the bottom and pinched with pointed silver spikes, to represent the sun as a rising orb with silver sun rays. Inside the "Bear" silhouette is a bent arrow facing in the same direction as the "Bear" appears to be moving. The arrow is commonly used in conjunction with the Bear in Navajo art, textiles, and jewelry, to symbolize the life force, or 'heartline', of the animal's spirit. These "Bear" fetish earrings combine a simplicity of design with expert Navajo silversmithing; combine simple, sparse imagery with complex symbols and meaning. Very attractive; with the heft of sterling silver, yet very comfortable to wear (with the Shephard's clasps/hooks, they are as light to wear as silhouettes). Very nice. A great gift.
