Debates and Proceedings of the Constitutional Convention of the State of California, Convened at the City of Sacramento, Saturday, September 28, 1878. E. B. Willis and P. K. Stockton, official stenographers Sacramento: J. D. Young, Supt. State Printing. 1880-81. Three volumes, complete. 11.75 by 8.5 inches. 1578 pages, including an extensive index in volume 3. Seldom seen on the market. Last copy at auction more than 10 years ago. CONDITION: Good only in original half-calf and marbled-paper bindings. The books were stored for many years on their spines and the covers and text blocks now have a definite curvature. This can probably be fixed in a book press or simply by shelving them tightly for some time. There is wear and chipping to the edges of the bindings. Several of the hinges are cracked, but the boards are still attached. Oval library stamps in all volumes, but no pockets or other defacement. According to John Howell Books catalog 50 (1980): "The second Constitutional Convention revised the California Constitution to include an extended Bill of Rights, imposed certain restrictions on the power of the legislature, and dropped Spanish as the second legal language of the state.
